Burberry marcó su nombre creando y patentando un material al cual le dio como nombre “gabardina”. Ligero, duradero, transpirable y que abarca todas las propiedades asociadas con los textiles más resistentes y hoy en día, la gabardina de Burberry sigue siendo su pieza TOP.

De familia agrícola, Burberry trabajaba como aprendiz en una tienda de ropa antes de abrir su propia tienda en Basingstoke a los 21 años. Tenía clientes que se dedicaban a la pesca, cacería o equitación y su inspiración eran ese tipo de deportes que practicaban las personas a su alrededor. Su objetivo era crear una línea de ropa que se adaptara al clima y que cumpliera con las exigencias de la vida en el campo. En 1888 Burberry patentó la gabardina y en 1891 la compañía había crecido tanto que se reubicó en Londres.

Una década después, Burberry abrió tienda en París debido a la gran demanda que tenía. En 1897, el comandante F.G Jackson, un explorador ártico inglés usó Burberry; Claude Grahame-White, un aviador importante también tenía puesto algo de Burberry el día que se convirtió en la primer persona en volar de Londres a Manchester en menos de 24 horas y en 1911, Roald Amundsen fue la primer persona en alcanzar el Polo Sur, claramente utilizando une prenda Burberry.

Después de ese gran impacto de la expedición a la Antártica, Burberry creó lo que ahora es un clásico, su “trench coat”. Llamada “Tielocken coat” la cual contaba con una sola correa, cierre de hebilla y se abotonaba en el cuello, se popularizó entre los oficiales del ejército durante la Primera Guerra Mundial.

Hoy en día la identidad de Burberry permanece intacta y su print es un ícono que todos reconocemos al instante.

Burberry made his name by creating and patenting a material to which he gave the name “gabardine”. Lightweight, durable, breathable and encompassing all the properties associated with the most enduring materials and today, Burberry’s gabardine is still the bran’s bestseller.

Born in the farming community, Burberry worked as an apprentice in a clothing store before opening his own store in Basingstoke at the age of 21.

He had clients who practiced fishing, hunting or riding and he took that as inspiration. His goal was to create a clothing label that would adapt to the weather and meet the demands of life in the countryside.

In 1888, Burberry patented the raincoat and in 1891 the company had grown so much that it relocated in London. A decade later, Burberry opened in Paris due to the high demand they had.

In 1897, Major F.G Jackson, an English Arctic explorer wore Burberry; Claude Grahame-White, a major aviator also wore Burberry when he became the first person to fly from London to Manchester in less than 24 hours and in 1911, Roald Amundsen was the first person to reach the South Pole, obviously wearing Burberry. After that great impact of the expedition to Antarctica, Burberry created what is now their classic item; the “trench coat”. Called “Tielocken coat” and it had a single strap, buckle closure and buttoned neck, it was popularized among army officers during the First World War.
